HELLÉ MUSIC

Growing up rocking out to bands like Queen and 10cc, Hellé developed a taste for unsystematic subject matter and masterful musical transition: ‘I loved my dad’s taste in music, like 10cc and Queen. They showed the music world how good music was written: bringing such contrasting musical styles and mixing them seamlessly was what they did best. I love how they wrote such random songs too and that definitely gave me the inspiration to be more creative with my subjects.’

Soul legends Nina Simone and Aretha Franklin also played a huge part in Hellé love of music: ‘My mum has always loved soul music and I remember Nina Simone from being really young. Nina wrote the most heart-wrenching songs about her life and the things she had to deal with. I strive to write songs that tell stories about real life and not about a make-believe land where everything goes the way it’s supposed to. Both her and Aretha had voices that would stop you in your tracks; they are both iconic vocalists that symbolise, to me, everything that a singer should be.’

NEWCASTLE SOUL SINGER

Helle The album ‘I am a Singer of Songs’ was written by Hellé and two rappers: D-Flava from London and Le Spy, a Parisian rapper. Meeting when Hellé was at Sheffield Hallam University in 2001, they started jamming and stuck together: D-Flava and Le Spy creating the instrumentals of the songs and Hellé writing her melody and lyrics.

Using the home-studios of both rappers, the album took shape over 3 years and reminds Hellé of good times: ‘I loved working with my boys in Sheffield.

'I was given loads of creative freedom and they encouraged me to write songs about whatever my inspiration was at the time. They took me into their group and we ended up with an amazing album; I owe them a lot and will always be grateful to them for believing in me.’

The group disbanded in 2004 but Hellé is still rocking on: moving to Newcastle, writing more songs and still determined to find another collaborator. Since meeting a very talented pianist, Jonathan, Hellé is now working towards a ‘Metropolitan Soul’ genre and a new direction: ‘’I am a Singer of Songs’ is an album that I love with all my heart but I’m moving towards a softer, more sublimely soulful album.’
Concentrating on fusing classic jazz and soul elements with the hip-hop philosophy of hard-hitting lyrics and beat experimentation, Hellé plans to concoct some magical, modern soul music for this generation.

The music that you will here from Hellé in the future will be a true reflection of her style: 60’s soul melodies, the ballsy lyrical content of the head-strong 80’s and a big leap into experimental instrumentalisation.
